Cardinals cruise past Gallaudet in 2011 opener
WASHINGTON – CUA got the 2011 season off to a strong start with a 5-0 win over Gallaudet on Thursday evening. The Cardinals scored twice in the opening half, added three more scores after halftime and held Gallaudet without a shot for the entire 90 minutes. Five different Cardinals scored, including Courtney Orgill, Regina Zolbrod, Caitlin Brett, Lauren Cadott and Caroline Burke.
Orgill got CUA on the board just over a minute into the match when she buried a penalty kick.
The Cardinals controlled the action with 10 unanswered shots and then Zolbrod added CUA's second goal with 29:53 gone in the match off a feed from Kiersten Gault.
CUA wound up outshooting the Bison 16-0 in the half and had five corner kicks during that time.
Nine minutes into the second half Caroline Hopkins found Brett and the senior found the back of the net to give CUA a 3-0 advantage.
CUA kept the pressure on with seven shots in a seven-minute span, topped off by Cadott's breakaway goal at the 77:24 mark.
Eight minutes later Burke got into the act off a feed from Mary McGann and the lead was up to five.
Senior Christina Cassidy played the first 80:59 for CUA in goal before giving way to sophomore Yasmeen Ajdari for the final 9:01. Gallaudet keeper Casey McCullough was busy all evening, sending back 20 shots.
CUA remains on the road this weekend when the Cardinals head to Connecticut to face Head Coach J.P. Sousa's alma mater, Western Connecticut on Saturday afternoon. Match time is slated for 3 p.m.
