Burke and Saia honored by Landmark Conference
WASHINGTON – After earning its second straight conference win by way of shutout, the CUA women's soccer team was rewarded on Monday when Caroline Burke and Erin Saia were named the Landmark Conference's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. With that pair leading the way the Cardinals downed Susquehanna 2-0 on the road to improve to 2-0 in the conference.
Burke had a big day for CUA on Saturday, scoring both Cardinal goals to provide all the offense in the win. The senior netted her first score in the eighth minute and then sealed the win with a penalty kick goal in the 39th minute. Burke took just two shots on the day, both of which found the back of the net.
Burke has scored four goals for CUA this season, including one game-winner. In nine games she has totaled 15 shots.
Saia was the leader of a CUA defense that shut out its second straight opponent and limited the Crusaders to just six shots on Saturday, all of which came in the second half. Susquehanna also had to zero corner kicks in CUA's win. Saia has started all nine contests for the Cardinals in 2011.
CUA and its award winners return to action on Thursday evening when they travel to take on Eastern Mennonite. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
