CUA falls to Western Connecticut 4-0 on the road

DANBURY, Conn. – The Cardinals suffered their first loss of 2011 on Saturday afternoon, falling to Western Connecticut 4-0.  The Colonials scored two goals in each half to win their season opener and drop CUA to 1-1 on the year.

Western Connecticut jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 6:37 into the match when Ariana D'Aurio scored off a feed from Jillian Duran.

25 minutes into the match, CUA unleashed three consecutive shots, including a pair from Courtney Orgill, but one of the shots was saved and the other two went wide, keeping the score at 1-0.

Another shot by Orgill, this one coming with under six minutes left before halftime, was saved, and less than four minutes later the Colonials struck again, this time by Caitlin Avery on a penalty kick.

Each team took only one shot in the opening 14 minutes of the second half, but at the 62:22 mark Ashley Hutkowski found the back of the net and CUA was down by three.

Western Connecticut then put the game out of reach when Hutkowski scored her second goal of the day, this one coming off an assist by Amber Pelletier.

Both teams were credited with nine shots on the day, while CUA owned a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.  Caitlin Avery started in goal for the home team and stopped three shots in 74 minutes of action, while Jamie Trayer finished things off and sent back one shot.  Christina Cassidy played all 90 minutes for the Cardinals and registered one save.

CUA will be off until Friday, September 9 when the Cardinals host the 2011 DC Classic.  Up first for CUA is a showdown with FDU-Florham inside Cardinal Stadium.  Action begins at 7:30 p.m.
