Cardinals face Salisbury on Friday in 2012 spring opener
WASHINGTON – After not playing a match for over five months, the CUA women's tennis team will get its 2012 spring season underway on Friday when the Cardinals hit the road to face Salisbury. CUA went 3-2 during the fall, which followed a strong 15-7 season in 2010-11.
CUA's last match took place on September 19 when the Cardinals defeated York College 5-4. CUA also beat St. Mary's and Hood during the fall, in a tune up for the championship spring segment.
Leading the way for the Cardinals during the fall was Caitlin Porter, who went 4-0 in singles play, and added two more wins in doubles.
Ritamarie Holden, Emma Needham, and Isabel Tanco also won multiple matches at singles, while Holden, Tontz, Elaina Sceusa, and Amanda Pellegrino earned multiple wins in doubles play.
Head Coach Dana Dowd has a young and talented roster to work with this spring, including Porter and Andie Ingram, who were All-Landmark Conference selections a season ago. Ingram won six matches in singles competition a season ago, including three vs. Landmark Conference foes, and added another win during the fall season.
CUA also welcomes back Margie Selinger this spring, after she studied abroad last semester. Selinger won five singles and five doubles matches in 2010-11.
CUA lost last year's match vs. Salisbury in late February. Like this year, it was the Cardinals' spring season opener. The Sea Gulls have played already this spring, hosting the three-day Sea Gull Open in early February.
Friday's match is slated for a 4 p.m. start from Salisbury, Md.
The Cardinals will then head to South Carolina in early March for their annual spring break trip. CUA's home opener will take place on March 14 against Division I foe Loyola (Md.) at 2:15 p.m.
