Cardinals perform well at ITA Regional Championship
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – CUA continued its fall season at the ITA Regional Championship this past weekend. Five Cardinals competed, including Emma Needham, Elaina Sceusa, Caitlin Porter, Isabel Tanco and Margie Selinger, with Needham reaching the finals and Tanco advancing to the semifinals.
In the women's blue singles draw, Needham defeated Yuliya Rigg of Sweet Briar College 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16 and then picked up a hard-fought 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 win over Caroline Wood of Franklin & Marshall to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinal round, Needham moved through to the finals after Andrea Bush was forced to withdraw. Washington College's Gyeyeon Kang then defeated Needham 6-0, 6-2 in the final round.
In the women's singles championship draw, Sceusa dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to ninth-seeded Caitlin Gallagher of Haverford in the round of 64, and Selinger dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match to Abbey Hamstra of Carnegie Mellon in the round of 64.
Sceusa was upended by Washington College's Kat Cohen 8-4 in the consolation round, and Margie Selinger fell to Swarthmore's Emily Rosenbaum 8-1 in the same round.
Porter competed in the women's blue 3 singles bracket, defeating Megan Phillips of Juniata 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16 before falling to Muhlenberg's Sharon Resnikoff 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
In the women's blue 5 singles bracket, Tanco had a strong showing, advancing all the way to the semifinals. She defeated Jessie Mitchell of Baldwin Wallace 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 16 and Miranda Martin of Mary Washington 7-5, 6-3 in a close match in the quarterfinals.
Tanco then fell to Franklin & Marshall's Emily Gruenberg 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals.
In doubles action, in the championship bracket, Sceusa and Selinger fell in the first round 8-1 to Washington and Lee's Meghan Buell and Claire Cahill and were then upended 8-3 against Dickinson's Shannon Lavery and Alysia Rodgers in the consolation round.
In the doubles blue 2 bracket, Porter and Tanco earned an 8-6 win in the round of 16 over Elizabethtown's Kaitlyn Pellegrino and Adriana Scotto, before falling 8-2 in the quarterfinals.
CUA continues its fall season on Thursday afternoon when the Cardinals travel to face Stevenson. Start time is set for 2 p.m.
