Cardinals to host semifinal match after downing Eagles 5-4
HUNTINGDON, Pa. – CUA will host its first Landmark Conference Tournament match after downing Juniata 5-4 on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals received singles wins from Marge Selinger, Liz Harvey, Ritamarie Holden and Caitlin Porter, and also won the 3rd doubles point to clinch the second seed. CUA will now host Scranton in the tournament semifinals.
In doubles action, Andie Ingram and Isabel Tanco picked up a crucial 9-8 win over Jacklyn Renninger and Cara Stough at the 3rd flight.
The Eagles won the other two matches, with Harvey and Selinger falling 9-7 at the 1st flight, and Holden and Porter dropping an 8-2 decision at the 2nd flight.
Trailing 2-1 in the match, CUA rallied to win four of the six singles points.
Selinger got the Cards going with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Heather Waring at the 1st flight, while Harvey earned an equally difficult 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at the 2nd flight.
Holden followed suit and defeated Renninger 6-3, 6-2 at 3rd singles, while Elaina Sceusa was downed 6-4, 6-0 by Stough at 4th singles.
Emma Needham dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 decision to Yana Kohler at 6th singles, setting the stages for Porter and Tory Gray at the 5th flight.
With the match tied at 4, Porter dropped the first set to Gray 2-6. The CUA junior then took control, and defeated Gray 6-0, 6-3 to lift CUA to victory and secure a home match in the semifinals.
Porter remains unbeaten with the win, posting a perfect 15-0 record this season, including a 7-0 mark at the 5th singles flight.
CUA now moves into the Landmark Conference Tournament for the first time since 2011. The Cardinals have never won a match in the Landmark tourney.
The Cardinals and Scranton square off at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon in Washington. CUA defeated the Royals 6-3 on April 6 at home.
The other semifinal pits top-seeded Goucher against No. 4 Juniata, with the winners meeting on Saturday, April 27.
