WASHINGTON – The Catholic men's and women's tennis wrapped up weekend play with a match at Randolph-Macon and a home match against York (Pa.) on the CUA Tennis Courts.
On Friday, Sept. 20. Randolph-Macon defeated Catholic 5-3 on the men's side and 5-4 on the women's side.
During doubles action, No. 1 pair Juan Lorida and Brian Bradley defeated R-MC's Michael Baxter and Ryan Byrd 8-6. No. 2 doubles duo Joe Peters and Jason Quisberth overpowered Connor Hoerr and Brantley Stein 9-8 (7-5) for two CUA doubles points.
Lorido was the lone bird in singles success with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 No. 1 singles win over Byrd.
Similar to the men's finish, two doubles teams secured victories against Randolph-Macon. No. 1 women's team of Elaina Sceusa and Eliana Martinez beat Angelina Sportelli and Toni McDonald 8-3. No. 3 doubles team Isabel Tanco and Emma Needham defeated Holcomb and Melissa Tomlin 8-4.
On Saturday, Sept. 21 the Lady Cards defeated York (Pa.) 6-3, while the men dropped a 5-4 decision to the Pennsylvania visitors.
No. 1 doubles team Sceusa and Martinez defeated Dea Vlahos and Darain Naill 8-2, as No. 3 doubles pair Tanco and Torsiello beat Nikki Olson and Lauren Valles 8-1.
CUA went 4-of-2 in singles competition with Sceusa winning 6-1, 6-0, Torsiello winning 6-0, 6-1, Needham winning 6-4, 6-1, and Ingram winning 6-4, 6-1.
On the men's side, No. 1 doubles team Lorido and Bradley conquered Matt Rosenkrantz and Mario Herrera 8-1.
Lorido and Bradley went on to win their singles match with scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively.
Quisberth defeated his No. 4 opponent 6-2, 6-2.
