Catholic Stays Perfect with a Pair of Weekend Victories

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America women's tennis team secured its second win of the weekend on Sunday when they took down St. Mary's (Md.) at the Dowd Family Courts, prior to a win at McDaniel in Westminster, Md. on Saturday. The Cardinals are now a perfect 4-0 on the season.

Catholic won all but one singles match against the Green Terror in their 7-2 victory. Junior Elizabeth Ast led the way in the No. 2 spot as she battled for the win, 6-2, 6-4.

The Cardinals were boosted by impressive play from No. 3 freshman Caroline Ciocco and her classmate and No. 6 competitor Christina Cochrane, who both went perfect, 6-0, 6-0 against their counterparts.

Sophomore Lauren Edwards and freshman Colleen McLaughlin teamed up for a hard-fought No. 2 doubles win, 9-7. Edwards was also triumphant versus the Green Terror, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 4 singles spot.

Pennsylvania natives Bridget Kikelly and Cochrane also saw success in their No. 3 doubles 8-0 win.

Catholic continued its impressive play by overtaking the visiting Seahawks, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon.

Edwards remained undefeated as she took her third victory of the weekend, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6, over Savannah Bergen in the No. 5 singles match.

No. 2 Senior Sarah MacLean seized a win in the third round going 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Ast took her No. 4 match into a tie-breaker set and came out on top, 7-5.

The Cardinals also took two doubles victories as the No. 1 team of senior Jenna Gietl and junior Erin Cole and the No. 2 team of MacLean and McLaughlin both secured 8-6 wins.

Catholic will take on Washington D.C. rival Trinity on Saturday, September 21.
