Cards Finish Fall Season 1-0

WASHINGTON- The Catholic University women's tennis team recently completed the fall tennis season and will have the winter off before returning to action this spring. This fall the squad won the only dual match it competed in and also played in a number of tournaments.
The season got off to a solid start as the Cards beat the Villa Julie Mustangs, 7-2. The Cardinals won every match they competed in. Rachel Tenuta (Fayetteville, N.C.) defeated Villa Julie's Tory Alllinson 6-0, 6-0 to begin the Cardinals' reign over the Mustangs. Corrine Alcorn (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) kept the Cards flying high by defeating Barb Hnizda 7-5, (10-4). Julie Controne (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) beat Meghan Laschinger 6-4, 6-2. Keeping the streak alive, Liz Alberto (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) defeated Sarah Searing 6-1, 6-3. Annie Read finished the singles matches by defeating Melissa Venter 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles the Cardinals continued their winning ways with Tenuta and Alberto besting Allinson and Hnizda 8-0. The Cardinals' day was done with the last doubles match as Cotrone and Alcorn defeated Laschinger and Lauren Humphries, 8-4. The only matched won by Villa Julie was by default of Catholic.
In the next fall event, the Cards competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association tournament. Costello defeated Becca Davis by default and then played Helen Fisun but was defeated 8-1. In doubles, the Cardinals came close but couldn't pull out a win when Alcorn and Tenuta lost to Sarah Budrus and Anne Ailstock 8-4. Costello and Cotrone also had a close one losing to Dani Barish and Julia Lange, 8-5.
The Cardinals finished out their fall season with home-court advantage. The Capital Fall Tennis Classic included Landmark Conference teams Drew and Susquehanna as well as McDaniel who was the only non-team conference opponent.
In the first flight's semifinal game Tenuta defeated Brittany Guerin (Susquehanna) 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. The championship game was between Tenuta and Sarit Ashkenazi (Drew), in which Ashkenazi won 5-7, 7-5. In flight two, Alberto made it to the semifinals but lost to Michelle Ghelama (Drew). In the first round of doubles the Cardinals advanced to the semifinals with Tenuta and Alberto defeating Sarah Cronholm and Carly Mora (Drew) 8-3. In the finals the women won their first flight with Tenuta and Alberto defeating Guerin and Brittany Reiman (Susquehanna) 8-3 in the championship.
The Cardinals return to action on March 4, 2008 at Hilton Head Island, S.C. against Wartburg.
