Cardinals earn hard-fought victory at St. Vincent College
LATROBE, Pa. – The CUA women’s tennis team opened
its 2010 fall season on a strong note on Saturday as the Cardinals
earned a hard-fought 5-4 victory over St. Vincent College on the
road. The teams split the six singles matches and had to
depend on the doubles points to determine a winner.
CUA’s Elaina Sceusa and Isabel Tanco rallied after being down
1-4 and 2-5 at third doubles to earn a 9-7 win and that proved to
be the difference in the match.
After falling to St. Vincent last year by a score of 7-2, CUA was
focused on earning a win this time around and the Cardinals did
just that, sending the Bearcats to their first loss of the season.
In fact, St. Vincent had lost just four sets the entire
season prior to Saturday. CUA has a large and talented group
of freshmen on its roster this year, along with a determined group
of upperclassmen looking to make an impact.
Marge Selinger got the day off to a strong start with her 6-3, 6-4
win at first singles for CUA, while Tanco earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at
third singles. Andie Ingram then picked up a win at fifth
singles as she downed Stephanie Rubin 6-3, 6-0.
Also picking up singles wins on the day were Liz Harvey, Rose
Montani, Chrissy Harvey and Katie Johnson.
In doubles action St. Vincent took the first match as Alexis Cup
and Nicole Peer downed Sellinger and Caitlin Porter 8-6, but Ingram
and Harvey evened things up as they downed Stephanie Rubin and
Iessa Paruch 8-2.
Sceusa and Tanco then earned their hard-fought victory at third
doubles by a score of 9-7 as they rallied for the come-from-behind
win to seal things for the Cardinals.
In other doubles action, CUA swept all three matches. Isabel
Tontz and Amanda Pelligrino earned an 8-3 win, Gretchen Coombs and
Rose Montani also won 8-3 and Chrissy Harvey and Katie Johnson
picked up an 8-0 win.
The Cardinals will return to action on Sunday when they open up
their home schedule versus St. Mary’s (Md). The match
is slated to get underway beginning at 2:00.
