CUA sweeps through three more matches to move to 5-0
WASHINGTON – The CUA women’s tennis team continued
its winning ways on Friday and Saturday as the Cardinals ripped
through three matches with a trio of victories. CUA went down
the street on Friday and earned a 9-0 win over Trinity (D.C.) and
on Saturday the Cardinals came back with home wins over Hood (7-2)
and Lancaster Bible (8-1).
In the match at Trinity, the Cardinals dominated the action, not
losing a single point all afternoon. Gretchen Coombs got
things started at first singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win, while Julia
O’Connor and Allison Tontz followed with their own 6-0, 6-0
wins at second and third singles, respectively.
Anissa Boyko, Rosemary Lee Montani and Katie Johnson then earned
6-0, 6-0 wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles, respectively,
while Kat Polymeropoulos, Chrissy Harvey, and Margaux Blaux picked
up wins in added singles matches, all by identical 8-0 scores.
In doubles play, Coombs and Montani won the first flight 8-1 over
Rebecca Auleus and Sheila Jean-Baptiste. Tontz and
O’Connor then picked up an 8-1 win at second doubles, before
Kasia Zak and Anissa Boyko closed out the match with an 8-0 sweep
at third doubles.
In other doubles action, Harvey and Johnson combined for an 8-0
win, as did Blaux and Polymeropoulos.
On Saturday the Cardinals remained unbeaten with a pair of wins
over Hood and Lancaster Bible.
In the day’s first match versus Hood, the Cardinals earned a
7-2 win. Elaina Sceusa fell at first singles to Emily Maerz
6-1, 6-1, before Isabel Tanco picked up the Cardinals first win of
the day at the second flight, 6-1, 6-1.
Zak and Blaux earned wins by default in singles play, while
O’Connor won 6-1, 6-0 at the fourth flight and Johnson earned
a 6-2, 6-2 win at fifth singles.
Sceusa and Tanco lost a tough 8-4 match in first doubles action,
but Amanda Pellegrino and Blaux came back to register a 9-7 win at
the second flight. Zak and O’Connor then sealed things
for CUA with a win at third doubles.
In CUA’s second match of Saturday the Cardinals defeated
Lancaster Bible 8-1. LCB’s Nicole Karschner downed
CUA’a Caitlin Porter 6-3, 6-0 at first singles but the
Cardinals ripped off five straight wins after that beginning with
Elizabeth Harvey at the second flight (6-1, 6-1).
Coombs (6-2, 6-2) and Boyko (6-3, 6-4) picked up wins at third and
fourth singles, respectively before giving way to Tontz who cruised
to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the fifth flight. Christine Harvey then
engaged in a back-and-forth match with Kayla Scott at the final
singles flight as she emerged 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Annie Maybell also picked up a win in singles action, emerging
8-1.
Andie Ingram and Elizabeth Harvey got doubles play off to a strong
start for CUA with an 8-4 win at the first flight and Katie Johnson
and Christine Harvey followed with an 8-5 win at the second
flight.
Polymeropoulos and Maybell then ended the match with an 8-3 win at
third doubles over Kayla Scott and Becky Griffes.
The Cardinals will return to the court on Sunday, September 19
when they head to Maryland to take on the McDaniel Green
Terror.
