Cardinals earn first win in S.C. by downing Ohio Wesleyan 5-4

PORT ROYAl, S.C. – CUA registered its first win of its spring break trip on Tuesday with the Cardinals downing Ohio Wesleyan 5-4 in a back-and-forth match.  The Cardinals received wins from Majorie Selinger and Caitlin Porter at singles and then took all three doubles matches to earn their ninth win of the season.

Selinger downed Emily Kiourtsis 6-3, 6-2 at first singles, but the Bishops responded by winning the next three matches to go in front 3-1.  Andie Ingram fell 6-4, 6-3 at the second flight, Elaina Sceusa was outlasted 6-2, 6-2 at the third flight and Ritamarie Holden was upended 6-3, 13-11 in a thrilling finish at the fourth flight.

Porter gave CUA its second singles win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mackenzie Conway at the fifth flight, but Rosemary Montani fell to Mackenzie Keffalos at the sixth flight and the Bishops led 4-2.

In doubles play Sceusa and Selinger won the first flight 8-3 and Holden and Ingram outlasted Conway and Jordan Leslie 9-8 at the second flight to tie the match at four.

Gretchen Coombs and Porter then put the finishing touches on the CUA victory with an 8-5 win at the third flight over Keffalos and Becky Simon.

On Wednesday the Cardinals take on Wittenberg in Palmetto Dunes, S.C.  Match time is slated for 8 a.m.
