Three Cardinals win titles; coaches earn major award

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Bolstered by three individual champions and a relay title, the CUA women's track and field team placed third at the 2012 Landmark Conference indoor championship on Saturday.  In addition, Head Coach Joe Fisher and his assistants were named the Women's Co-Coaching Staff of the Year.

CUA's individual champs were Laura Kinley (mile), Camelia Mayfield (5000 meters), and Kelly Carioto (shot put).  In addition, the distance medley relay team won its respective event.

Kinley captured the mile championship in 5:20.14, while in the 800 meters, she placed third in a time of 2:28 to earn six points for the Cardinals.

In the 5000 meters, Mayfield crossed first in a time of 18:56.05.

CUA had quite a day in the relay events, winning the distance medley relay in 13:15.87.  The 4x200 meter relay team picked up four points for CUA with a fourth place finish, finishing in a time of 1:56.66, while the 4x800 relay team placed second, in 10:30.35.

In the field events, Carioto took first in the shot put with a throw of 41'5 ¼", which was five feet further than the second place finisher. Mary Clark placed fourth in the event, with a toss of 35'3 ¼".

Clark then finished third in the weight throw, with a toss of 41'9 ¾".

Courtney Doran finished third in the high jump, clearing 5'1 ¾", while Erin Sandlin finished sixth in the pole vault (9'6 ¼").

Candance Williamson picked up a point for CUA with a sixth place finish in the triple jump (32'10 ½").

CUA finished with 82 points on the day to place third.  Moravian took the top spot with 159 points, followed by Susquehanna (125), CUA (82), Goucher (77), Juniata (63) and Merchant Marine Academy (18).

The majority of the CUA team will be back in action on March 24 when the Cardinals compete at the Battleground Relays in the outdoor season opener.  Prior to that, select Cardinals will take part in the indoor ECAC Championship in New York City on March 2.
