Four first place, six top-five performances highlight CUA's day
GRANTHAM, Pa. – CUA had a strong showing at the Messiah College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Laura Kinley, Camelia Mayfield, Kelly Carioto and Mary Clark all won events, while Keely Eckberg, Carioto, Clark, Courtney Doran, Hannah Gillis and the 4x400 relay team all posted top-five finishes.
In the 800 meters, Kinley crossed first with a time of 2:24.78, while Maria Docal came in 16th place in 2:38.02.
Mayfield won the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:48.55, which was more than 14 seconds faster than the second place finisher.
Kristen Rayfield took seventh in the 1500 meters, crossing in 5:15.86, with Corine Dolan coming in 21st (5:38.98).
In the 5000 meters, Eckberg was fifth, posting a time of 20:38.57, while Gillis placed seventh in the 400 hurdles (74.24) and Candance Williamson came in 10th (79.09).
In the relay events, the 4x400 team of Grace Lally, Docal, Gillis and Williamson came in fourth place (4:30).
In the field events, Carioto continued her strong spring with a first place finish in the shot put (38'8 ¼"), with Clark in fifth (35'10 ½"), Kerri Hanley in 15th (30'5 ½"), Gillis in 18th (28' 1/4"), and Kaila DeFalco in 20th (26'4 ¼").
Carioto also won the discus, with a throw of 130'8", with Clark coming in 11th (84'8"), and Hanley in 14th (70'3").
Clark took first in the hammer with a toss of 140'2", while Carioto was next in line with a throw of 124'8". DeFalco also competed, coming in sixth in the event, with a throw of 105'5".
Doran finished third in the high jump, after clearing 4'7 ¾", while Erin Sandlin came in seventh in the pole vault (8'8 ¼").
Gillis tied for second in the long jump with a leap of 16'1 ½", and Williamson came in seventh in the triple jump (32'5").
The Cardinals are back in action next weekend when they travel to Pennsylvania to compete at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday, April 21. Action gets underway beginning at 9 a.m. It is CUA's final tune-up prior to the Landmark Conference championships, which are the following weekend.
