Mayfield sets champ record, Carioto wins two titles on day one
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bolstered by championship winning performances by Camelia Mayfield and Kelly Carioto, CUA sits in second place at the Landmark Conference Championships after day one. Mayfield set a championship meet record with a time of 38:32.72 to win the 10,000 meters, while Carioto took first in the shot put and discus.
CUA scored 54 points on the opening day of the championships, which places the Cardinals in second place behind host Moravian, which tallied 79. Susquehanna is third with 46 points, followed by Juniata with 37 and Goucher with 17.
Mayfield's first place time helped her defeat 15 other runners in the 10,000, which included fellow Cardinals Keely Eckberg (40:52.96), Madeline Hotz (41:52.38) and Corine Dolan (44:36.35), who came in third, seventh and 12th, respectively.
Carioto's throw of 38'11 ¾" was over two feet better than the second place competitor in the shot put. The senior from Pittsburgh has now won the outdoor shot put conference championship twice in addition to her four indoor conference titles. Kerri Hanley also competed in the event, taking 10th with a throw of 31'7 ½".
Carioto then took first in the discus, registering a throw of 124'6" to defeat 15 other competitors. It marked the first conference championship for Carioto in the discus of her storied career.
In the 1500 meters, Laura Kinley placed second with a time of 4:50.34, earning Second Team All-Conference honors.
