Cardinals split two matches in Virginia
HARRISONBURG, Va. – CUA opened its 2011 season by splitting a pair of matches on Friday evening at the Hampton Inn and Sleep Invitational on the campus of Eastern Mennonite University. The Cardinals downed Salem 3-0 in the opener before falling to Stevenon by the same 3-0 score.
In the opener, CUA swept Salem with game scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-10. Claudia Jean led the Cardinals with 17 kills and she added ten digs, while Bridget Kulesh totaled nine kills and a pair of blocks. Michaela Carroll handed out a team-high 39 assists, and three Cardinals, including Jean, Carroll (12) and Kristina Purcell (19) notched double digit digs.
In the nightcap Stevenson took down the Cardinals 26-24, 25-20, 25-21. Jean totaled nine kills this time with Katie Chefalas next in line with six. Carroll registered 23 assists, while Jean (25), Purcell (19), Chefalas (15) and Kristen Schoeffling (10) all had at least ten digs.
Stevenson was led by Christine Isenberg with 17 kills and Samantha Perillo with 25 digs. Megan Miller was the team leader in blocks with four.
CUA wraps up action in Virginia on Saturday with another pair of matches, first taking on Mary Baldwin at noon and Philadelphia Biblical at 2.
