CUA splits two matches on opening day at Messiah Tournament
GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Cardinals opened their final weekend of the regular season by splitting a pair of matches at the Messiah College Tournament on Friday evening. CUA fell to host Messiah by a score of 3-1, before downing Penn State-Harrisburg 3-0. After the two matches, CUA's record sits at 23-7.
Messiah took the first two games in the opening match by scores of 26-24 and 25-12 before CUA earned a hard-fought 26-24 victory in the third set. Messiah answered with a 25-11 win though to seal the match win.
Kristina Purcell totaled 23 digs in the match, while Claudia Jean finished with 18 kills and 18 digs. Tess O'Leary had six kills, while Katie Chefalas totaled five.
Lucia Irazabal handed out 17 assists and Ines Zanotti handed out 16, while Isabel Eberstadt finished with six digs.
For Messiah, Jessica Grieb totaled 51 assists, and Lauren Rees finished with 23 kills and 13 digs. Megan Wise had a match-high 28 digs.
In the nightcap, CUA swept past Penn State-Harrisburg with ease, winning by scores of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-20.
Jean finished with another double-digit kill match, with 13 to go along with eight digs, while Purcell led the Cardinals with 11 digs. Irazabal handed out 18 assists, while Ines Zanotti and Eberstadt totaled 10 apiece.
Chefalas finished with five kills, while Patricia Fabijanczyk and Kristen Schoeffling totaled four apiece.
On Saturday CUA will play two more matches, beginning at 12:30 against Roanoke. At 2:30 the Cardinals will take on FDU-Florham.
