Win streak now at eight after Cards win three more

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The CUA volleyball team kept things rolling on Saturday at the Crusader Classic, winning three more matches to run the Cardinals winning streak to eight straight.  CUA took down Division II Pitt-Johnstown 3-2 in the opener, before sweeping Immaculata and Bryn Athyn to improve to 17-5 on the season. 

In CUA's opening match, the Cardinals took the first set 25-21 against Pitt-Johnstown before dropping the second 27-25. 

The Cardinals bounced back with a 25-21 win in set number-three, but a fifth set was needed after Pitt-Johnstown won 25-17 in the fourth set.

CUA picked up its 15th win of 2012 with a 15-8 win in the deciding fifth set.

Katie Chefalas led CUA in kills with 13, while Claudia Jean finished with 12 and Bridget Kulesh totaled 9.

Jean was the team leader in digs with 38, while Chefalas (28), Kristina Purcell (20), Kulesh (17) and Mariana Cruz (13) joined her in double figures.

Cruz handed out a team-high 33 assists and Audrey Bizak led the way in blocks with seven.

Against Immaculata, CUA won the first set 25-14 and then closed things out with 25-18 and 25-14 wins in the second and third, respectively.

This time, Kulesh led the Cards with 12 kills, and Purcell was the leader in digs with 18.  Jean added 13 digs and Chefalas finished with 9 kills.

Cruz totaled 23 assists in this match and Bizak again led the way in blocks with three.

The Cardinals closed things out with another sweep, this one coming against Bryn Athyn by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-11.

Kelly Crimmins finished with seven kills, while Jean and Chefalas totaled six.

Purcell (16) and Chefalas (11) registered double-digit digs and Cruz added 18 assists to her total.

The Cardinals close their weekend out with two more matches on Sunday in Selinsgrove, beginning with a 10 a.m. meeting with Penn State-Behrend.  At 3 p.m., CUA will face New Jersey City.
