CUA sweeps Mariners before dropping tough five-set decision to Eagles
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – CUA split its two matches on Saturday at the second Landmark Conference weekend, which is taking place on the campus of Moravian College. The Cardinals swept Merchant Marine 3-0 in the opener to extend their win streak to 12, before dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Juniata in the nightcap.
CUA raced right past USMMA, downing the Mariners in straight sets 25-10, 25-13 and 25-13.
Bridget Kulesh led the Cardinals with eight kills, while Katie Chefalas added five and Audrey Bizak and Kelly Crimmins finished with four apiece.
Fallon Foster (14) and Mariana Cruz (11) both totaled double-digit assists, and Kristina Purcell led the way with 22 digs.
Cruz (8), Bizak (7) and Tess O'Leary (7) also totaled impressive dig totals.
The Mariners were led by Michelle Danhof with 20 digs and five assists.
In the day's second match, CUA battled Juniata to the very end. The Eagles took the first set 25-9, but the Cardinals bounced right back to take set two 25-16.
Juniata went in front 2-1 with a 25-18 win in set number-three, but CUA again had an answer, forcing a fifth set with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
The final set came down to the final points, and Juniata was able to edge the Cards out, 16-14 to improve to 5-0 in the conference. CUA is right behind at 4-1.
Claudia Jean had a monster match for the Cardinals, finishing with 18 kills and 32 digs, while Purcell had 30 digs and Cruz totaled 26.
Kulesh (19) and Chefalas (17) were also in double figures in digs, and Chefalas joined Jean in double-digits in kills with 11.
Kelly Crimmins had five blocks and Kulesh totaled three.
For Juniata, Adena Delozier and Sarah McCarthy finished with 26 and 25 assists, respectively, while Amelia Kepler was the team leader in kills with 14.
CUA wraps up its second conference weekend on Sunday morning when the Cardinals take on the host Moravian Greyhounds at 11 a.m.
