CUA Volleyball Is Unsuccessful In Season Opening Event
WASHINGTON – During the two-day Haverford Invitational in Haverford, Pa., the Catholic University women's volleyball team opened the 2013 season with a record of 0-4 falling to Eastern (3-0), Haverford (3-0), Neumann (3-0), and Widener (3-1), on Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1.
Saturday action consisted of two matches going to three sets of play. Against Eastern, CUA fell 25-15, 25-14, 25-9. Freshman outside hitter Mary Paige Nesfeder guided the offensive effort with four kills on 15 attempts. Senior setter Mariana Cruz circulated seven assists and collected 16 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Audrey Bizak and freshman middle hitter Kathryn Herrington tallied one solo block apiece.
The Haverford match concluded with the host squad taking a 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 victory. Herrington notched a weekend-high 11 kills, as Cruz obtained her first double-figure assist record of the season with 23. Nesfeder earned two points from the serving line with two service aces, while freshman libero Michelle Bouchard gathered 14 digs and Herrington recorded two solo blocks.
CUA returned to the court on Sunday, suffering a three-set 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 loss to Neumann and a four-set 25-20, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18 loss to Widener.
Bizak led the Neumann contest with eight kills, as Cruz distributed 16 assists. Nesfeder tallied two service aces and shared the digging effort with freshman outside hitter Kelsey Leddy with eight digs apiece, while Herrington stopped five Neumann attack attempts.
The Cards obtained their first set win of the season during the final match of the weekend against Widener. Herrington tallied 10 kills, while Cruz notched a weekend-high 28 assists, Nesfeder served four aces, Bouchard collected 25 digs with a contribution by Nesfeder who gathered 24 digs, and Herrington tallied two solo blocks.
The Cardinals return to the DuFour Center to host the annual Guetle Volleyball Invitational on Aug. 7-8 (Saturday and Sunday). CUA welcomes Marymount (Va.), Mt. St. Vincent, Eastern Mennonite, and Swarthmore.
