WASHINGTON – The Catholic University Cardinals proved to be the superior birds on Monday, Oct. 7 with a 3-0 sweep of the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown at the DuFour Athletic Center on the CUA campus.
The Cardinals took set one 25-19. At the 20-18 mark, CUA headed to victory on a 4-1 run from two Blue Jay hitting errors, one Elizabethtown ball handling error and set-ending Catholic block.
E-Town began set two with a new setter, as Steph High came in to guide the offense. The visiting Blue Jays pulled away at the 6-6 mark, taking a 13-9 lead and forcing a Cardinal timeout. CUA's head women's volleyball coach Nagy Abdelrazek reignited the squad, which led CUA to a 22-10 lead, forcing the Blue Jays to take their second timeout of the set. With set point on their side, Kathryn Herrington pounded a kill in the left back corner for a 25-18 set two victory.
Elizabethtown refused to concede to the 2-0 Cardinal lead, as the Blue Jays went for every attack and every block with vengeance. CUA took the largest lead of the set with a score of 11-6. Following a Blue Jay timeout, Elizabethtown paced to a 7-6 run for a score of 17-13. The Cards returned to the court and snapped the run with a demonstrative solo block by Herrington. By minimizing their errors, the Cardinals closed out the match on an 8-6 run for a score of 25-19.
Mary Paige Nesfeder and Kalen Backe finished in double-figures with 19 kills and 11 kills, respectively. Mariana Cruz circulated 30 assists, while Michelle Bouchard tallied 30 digs and Audrey Bizak and Herrington totaled two solo blocks each.
CUA heads to Neumann University for the two-day Knights Fall Classic on Oct. 11-12. The Cardinals will face Penn State-Behrend, Rowan, Franklin and Marshall and Ursinus.
