CUA Volleyball Sweeps NJCU Tournament

WASHINGTON  - For the final regular-season weekend of the year, the CUA volleyball team swept the New Jersey City tournament with a 4-0 finish and ending the season on five-game winning streak.

The Cards defeated New Jersey City, Old Westbury, Saint Joseph's (L.I.) and Farmingdale State in three sets, advancing to 22-14 overall.

In the opening 25-19, 25-18, 25-14 victory, Kalen Backe led the squad with 13 kills and two service aces, Mariana Cruz recoded 26 assists, Michelle Bouchard collected 17 digs and Audrey Bizak tallied two solo blocks.

The Old Westbury contest with won with scores of 25-11, 25-12, 25-10, Bizak notched nine kills and another two solo blocks, as Cruz distributed 32 assist and finished with three service aces and Bochard collected 18 digs.

On Sunday, CUA swept St. Joseph's (L.I.) 25-18, 25-17, 25-15.  Three Cardinals attained double-figure kill outings: Mary Paige Nesfeder (13), Backe (11) and Katheryn Herrington (10).  Cruz tallied 39 assists, while Nesfeder amassed six service aces.  Bouchard collected 19 digs accompanied by Backe, Cruz and Nesfeder's 10 digs apiece.

In the final contest of the tournament, CUA defeated Farmingdale 25-19, 25-22, 25-16.  Bridget Kulesh amassed 10 kills, Colleen Farley took over the setting responsibilities and circulated 27 assists, as Cruz tallied four service aces and Elizabeth Levine gathered a team-high eight digs.

CUA will host Goucher on Tuesday, Nov. 5 for the Landmark Conference semi-final game at 7 p.m.
