WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America volleyball team has officially announced its schedule for the 2014 season. This season the Cardinals will play in four tournaments, opening the season at the Eastern Mennonite University Invitational from Aug. 29-30. Included in the four tournaments and the EMU season opener will be the Cards annual CUA Guetle Invitational, Catholic will have a total of 33 regular season games with 15 home matches.
"Opening up our season at EMU will be a great start for our freshmen and our program collectively," said CUA Head Women's Volleyball Coach Nagy Abdelrazek.
The first matches of the season will take place in Harrisonburg, Va., at the EMU Invitational, where the Cardinals play two games on Friday, Aug. 29 against Mary Baldwin at 3:00 p.m. and Salem at 7:00 p.m. The team will conclude play on Saturday, Aug. 30 with matches against East. Mennonite at 10:00 a.m. and Hood at 12:00p.m.
"The 16th Annual Guetle Invitational will be consist of six solid teams from five different conferences giving us a great challenge as we head into conference play," said Abdelrazek.
The Cardinals will play its first home contests of the year, while hosting the CUA Guetle Invitational. The first two matches will be on Saturday, Sept. 6, with CUA taking on New Jersey City at 12:00 p.m. and finishing the day with Randolph-Macon at 4:00 p.m. The invitational will wrap up on Sunday, Sept. 7 as CUA squares off against Marywood at 10:00 a.m. and Cabrini at 2:00 p.m.
The next invitational for the Cards will be the Lycoming Invitational held in Williamsport, Pa., on Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13. The first day CUA will play the host team Lycoming at 2:00 p.m. and Elmira at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Cardinals will complete the invitational with matches against Houghton at 11:30 a.m. and Pitt-Bradford at 1:30 p.m.
CUA's first single match contests will take place following the Lycoming Invitational. Catholic will host Notre Dame (Md.) on Tuesday, Sept. 16 an McDaniel the following day with both matches slated for 7:00 p.m. Before hosting conference foe Goucher on Tuesday, Sept. 23 and hosting the Landmark Conference weekend against Goucher and Merchant Marine on Saturday, Sept. 27, the Cardinals take on non-conference opponent Hood on Saturday, Sept. 20.
In the midst of Landmark Conference actoin, CUA will have 11 non-conference games including the Knight's Fall Classic in Aston, Pa. The Cardinals will host three straight non-conference opponents starting with Mary Washington on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m., York (Pa.) on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m., and finishing with Washington College on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
The last invitation of the season will be the Knight's Fall Classic hosted by Neumann University. The Cardinals start play on Friday, Oct. 10 against Ursinus at 5:00 p.m. and concludes the invitational on Saturday, Oct. 11 with matches against Rutgers-Camden and Neumann at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
The final non-conference games are as follows: Thursday, Oct. 16 vs. Stevenson at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25 versus Shenandoah at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25 at Lynchburg at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 29 at Gallaudet at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1 against Bridgewater at 11:00 a.m., and the final regular season game will be on Saturday, Nov. 1 versus Lancaster Bible at 3:00 p.m.
"The 2014 season will mark the beginning for CUA volleyball to make its most aggressive run for the Landmark Conference Title," said Abdelrazek.
