Volleyball Ranked Third in Landmark Preseason Poll

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America volleyball team is just two days away from the start of the 2017 season and earned a playoff-garnering spot in the Landmark Conference Playoffs as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.

The Cardinals were picked third in the preseason coaches poll with 32 points, three ahead of fourth-place Scranton. Juniata was once again tabbed as the conference favorite with 60 points and Susquehanna second with 45.

Head coach Nagy Abdelrazek leads his team out on the court for the 25th-straight season as Catholic aims for its eighth 20-win season in the past nine years. The Cards will also look to break through into the Landmark Championship after two straight semifinal appearances.

Catholic returns seven seniors this year, including All-Landmark selection Maria Cristina Juelle along with the Landmark's second-leading setter, Michelle Seals. Classmates Brynn Cooley and Tara Rempel return as starters for the Cards, while senior middle hitter Amy O'Connor is anticipated to see another jump after a career-best junior campaign.

In addition to their senior class, several underclassmen are expected to have an impact in their first two seasons on the team. Sophomore Isabelle Cooper posted a strong rookie season in 2016 and will be joined a six-person freshmen class on a deep Catholic team.

The Cardinals begin the quest toward the Landmark title this weekend with four matches at the Eastern Mennonite Invitational. Catholic's first home matches come the following weekend at the annual Guetle Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 8 and 9.
