WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America volleyball team suffered its first defeat of the season as the Cardinals were topped at Gettysburg, 3-1, on Wednesday night. Catholic took the first set and got a double-double from senior Maria Cristina Juelle, but the Bullets rallied to earn the win.
Juelle led the way with 14 kills and 13 digs, and added a service ace, two blocks and an assist in her first game of the year.
Catholic won the first set, 25-23, and saw the score reversed in the second. Gettysburg was able to stay perfect on the season as they closed out the next two sets for the win.
Senior Amy O'Connor had another strong match at the net as she posted 10 kills and three blocks. Freshman Patricia Martinez went for nine kills and 23 digs while her classmate and libero Christina Ciola led the team with 25 digs.
Catholic has several attempts to avenge its first loss of the as the Cardinals host the annual CUA Guetle Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The Cards will play four games starting Friday at 4 p.m., against Pitt-Greensburg.
