Martinez Double-Doubles in Loss at Mary Washington

Fredericksburg, Va. — The Catholic University of America volleyball team traveled to nearby Mary Washington on Wednesday night and despite a double-double from freshman outside hitter Patricia Martinez, the Cardinals were topped, 3-0.

Martinez had a team-high 15 kills as she hit .342 for the match and added 11 digs for the double dip.

Catholic's freshman trio of Martinez, Christina Ciola and Maria Gonzalez paced the Cards in kills, digs and assists, respectively. Ciola totaled a game-high 17 digs and added a service ace while Gonzalez set up 32 of Catholic's 34 kills.

Mary Washington was able to match the strong individual performances however with three players with 12-plus kills and 51 total put-aways on .315 hitting.

The Eagles won by just two, 25-23, in the first sets but came back to hold the Cardinals under 19 points in each of the next two frames.

Catholic heads to Swarthmore, Pa. this weekend for the Swarthmore Invitational to take on the host Garnet along with Eastern and Neumann.
