Cardinals Defeat Neumann at Garnet Invite

Swarthmore, Pa. — The Catholic University of America volleyball team went 1-2 at Swarthmore's Garnet Invitational this past weekend and earned a 3-1 victory over Neumann. The Cardinals fell to Swarthmore, 3-0, and Eastern, 3-1, inside Tarble Pavilion.

All-tournament selection Amy O'Connor led the way for Catholic in the win over Neumann with a game-high 13 kills and two blocks. The senior also added four aces and six digs in an all-around performance by the middle hitter.

Senior Brynn Cooley and rookie Maria Gonzalez were equally impressive as they both went for double-doubles in the victory. Cooley totaled 11 kills and 10 digs along with a match-high five service aces while Gonzalez had a game-high 36 assists along with 13 digs.

Rookie outside hitter Patricia Martinez was strong in the loss to Swarthmore with 10 kills, 16 digs, two aces and a block.

Catholic was able to take the first set against Eastern but the Eagles rallied to take the next three.

Cooley just missed another double-dip with eight kills and 16 digs.

The Cardinals will head down North Captiol on Wednesday when they take on Gallaudet on Wednesday night, October 11, at 7 p.m.
