Abdelrazek named regional
coach of the year by AVCA
Nagy Abdelrazek (Kensington, Md.) was named Mid-Atlantic
Region Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches
Association. He will be honored at the Tachikara/AVCA Coach of the
Year banquet in Richmond, Va., on Dec. 14.
Abdelrazek, who just completed his eighth year at Catholic University, led the Cardinals to their finest season ever in 2000. The team went 35-6 (.854), won a school-record 18 consecutive matches and captured the Capital Athletic Conference regular season championship.
The Cardinals were ranked in the AVCA Top 20 poll for the first time, climbing as high as 17th, and were tabbed No. 2 in the Mid-Atlantic Region the latter part of the year. They won three tournaments in 2000: the Washington and Lee Invitational, the Gallaudet Invitational and the CUA Invitational.
Abdelrazek was earlier named CAC Coach of the Year for the third time (1994, '99). He coached two first-team All-CAC selections this season and has produced the past two CAC Rookies of the Year.
