Cardinals reach NCAA Tournament Nov. 4, 2001

WASHINGTON - Catholic was awarded the No. 2 seed in the Mid-Atlantic regional and will play the winner of a first-round game between host Gettysburg, the No. 3 seed, and No. 6-seeded Kean in the Division III NCAA Tournament.

If the Cardinals win Friday evening (game time to be determined), they will play the winner of Juniata vs. Scranton or Eastern on Saturday for the regional championship.

The third time was the charm for Catholic on Saturday evening as the Cardinals defeated Mary Washington, 3-0 to capture their second CAC Championship. The Cardinals were finalists in 1999 and 2000, but fell short in both title games.

This time the Eagles were no match for Catholic as CUA captured its first CAC title since 1994. Game scores were 30-21, 30-22, and 30-18.

Senior Liz Carden pounded out a game-high 15 kills while teammate Kelly Kings added nine. Carden also chipped in 12 digs while senior Mary Ellen Ryan shoveled out a game-high 25 digs.

After getting within four points in the first set at 21-17, Mary Washington quickly fell behind 27-19 and dropped the first set 30-21. In the second set it was much of the same as the Eagles found themselves rallying only to see Catholic rebound with an offensive fury.

Down 2-0 in the third set, the Cardinals jumped out to a 20-9 lead and never looked back.
