Cards Soar Above Eagles in 3-0 Win
CUA improves to 3-2 in conference play
WASHINGTON - Catholic University volleyball (14-14, 3-2 CAC) won a well-fought battle with the Mary Washington Eagles (11-8, 0-5 CAC) Wednesday evening at the DuFour Center by a 3-0 decision. The Cardinals started out on top in all three games and didn't relinquish the lead for the remainder.
CUA won the first game 30-20. The two teams played close in the beginning and it looked like they had a long night ahead of them, but some big hitting by Whitney Dachelet (Anniston, Ala./Donoho) and Carey Anne Nassib (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria) solidified the victory.
The second game was sparked by the serves of Christina Lessard (Dover, Del./St. Thomas More). The sophomore setter came in for Dachelet to serve and ignited a big run that gave the Cards some breathing room before finishing the Eagles off 30-23.
The final game of the match was led by Emily McGlynn (Tallahasse, Fla./Leon). The starting setter put the Cardinals on a roll with her pinpoint accuracy on service. This left the Eagles looking at a 16-2 deficit. Mary Washington battled back but CUA was able to win the game by a score of 30-20 which finished off the match.
Kathryn Fischer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) had a good match in the front row with ten kills, a majority coming in the final game. Dachelet also added eight for the Cards. McGlynn tallied 27 assists while Bethi Pritchard (New Orleans, La./Ben Franklin) led the defense with eight digs.
CUA volleyball will host Virginia Wesleyan this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The game coincides with the school's homecoming activities.
