Marlins Drop Cardinals In Five Games
CUA manages two convincing wins but can't get the third
WASHINGTON - The CUA volleyball team handily beat the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins in two games Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center. Unfortunately, the squad couldn't pull out one more victory to get the win over the visiting Marlins. Carey Anne Nassib (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Kilah Fox (Philadelphia, Pa./Merion Mercy) both led the team with 15 kills but their efforts were not enough.
CUA easily took the first game 30-22. Fox had a solid performance for the Cards with eight kills in nine attempted and no errors. In the second game, Catholic University fell by a close 30-27 with Fox again leading the charge registering four kills in six attempts with one error. The Cards got back on track in the third with an overpowering 30-19 win looking like they could take the match. Whitney Dachelet led the team with four kills in the balanced win.
Just as the Cards looked to be gaining momentum, the Marlins got some of their own and won the final to games to steal the match from CUA. Virginia Wesleyan won the fourth game 31-29 and the fifth 15-9 to win 3-2. Nassib posted five kills in the fourth game and one in the fifth as the Cardinals' best. In the fifth game Jessica Schoenfeld (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro) registered three from the front row.
Emily McGlynn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) had 44 assists for the match and Bethi Pritchard (New Orleans, La./Ben Franklin) notched 20 digs. Nassib also contributed in the back row with 18 digs.
The Cardinals will host St. Mary's this Thursday in their final home contest of 2006. Before the game there will be a short presentation honoring the senior class.
