CUA Falls in Close Match with St.
Dachelet leads the team with 15 kills
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America volleyball team (17-19) was eliminated from the CAC tournament Tuesday afternoon in a heartbreaking fashion. The Cards fought back against the St. Mary's Seahawks (19-9) coming back from a 2-0 deficit to lose 3-1 advancing the Seahawks to the semifinals versus Marymount.
CUA came out flat in game one notching just seven kills and falling 30-19. The series between the two squads was 1-1 with Tuesday's game giving one team the advantage but the Cardinals were unable to get any offense going.
In the second game, the Cards regrouped and came back from a deficit thanks to the hitting of senior captain Whitney Dachelet (Anniston, Ala./Donoho) with five kills in the game. Assisting her was Emily McGlynn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) who registered 13 assists for the game and a total of 42 for the match. Unfortunately the comeback was not enough as the Seahawks scraped by with the 30-28 win.
Looking at elimination the Cardinals putting on a thrilling performance in the third game taking the Seahawks all the way to the wire and winning 30-28. Dachelet again scored five kills but the big help came from McGlynn and Christina Lessard (Dover, Del./St. Thomas More Academy) who were both two of two at the net.
In the fourth game both teams went back and fourth before the Seahawks secured a solid lead. CUA had one more answer and came close but in the end St. Mary's walked away with the 30-24 win and the match.
Dachelet led CUA with 15 kills while Kilah Fox (Philadelphia, Pa./Merion Mercy) notched 12 after a strong fourth game. Fox was also a force on defense with one solo block and four assisted.
CUA finishes the season 17-19 and will return its second leading scorer and starting setter next season.
