Volleyball Drops a Heartbreaker to Marymount
Cardinals comes back after going down 0-2
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 12, 2006) - The CUA Cardinals came ever so close to coming back from a two-game deficit Tuesday night against the Marymount Saints (6-0, 1-0), but in the end the Cards were unable to claw all the way back in the CAC opener. The team was up in the final game but eventually lost 15-13 to drop to 4-5 on the season.
Marymount owned a majority of game one before CUA could get anything started. The Saints had already accumulated a large lead when freshman Carey Anne Nassib (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria) began to get hot. The outside hitter tallied seven kills in seven straight attempts but it was just not enough to overcome the Marymount lead. CUA lost the game 30-26.
The second game looked better for the Cards. Both teams stayed even and Nassib continued her dominance at the net but again the team couldn't hang on and fell 32-30. Setter Emily McGlynn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon), however, notched her highest assist total of the evening during the game with 14.
Things finally came together in the third game. With their backs against the wall, the Cardinals rallied for 14 kills and the 30-22 win. Senior captain Whitney Dachelet (Anniston, Ala./Donoho) accounted for six of the kills.
With the match at 2-1, CUA was nearly perfect in the fourth game winning 30-24. Nassib and Dachelet slammed down ball after ball at the net and libero Cathleen Carroll (Ann Arbor, Mich./A.A.Pioneer) managed eight digs on the defensive end.
The match then came down to the fifth and final game to 15. CUA started incredibly strong, but Marymount was always able to find a way back in. With the team trading points back and forth, the Saints caught a bit of momentum and were able to capture the win 15-13.
With its first CAC game out of the way, the Cardinals will play host of the CUA Guetle Invitational this weekend at the DuFour center. The tournament will feature Trinity, Mary Washington and Messiah. Games are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
