Cardinals Clinch #2 Seed at Final Landmark
CUA goes 2-1 over two days
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University volleyball squad (14-10, 5-1) clinched the second seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament by going 2-1 over the weekend in the final two days of conference play. CUA will have a few weeks before returning for a conference tournament weekend which will determine the conference champion.
CUA lost its first game of the weekend 3-0 to Juniata, the reigning D-III National Champions. The Eagles, who have lost just two matches all season, defeated the Cards 30-26, 30-23, 30-21. Despite the loss, CUA played three solid games against the powerhouse squad. In the first and second games Carey Anne Nassib posted four kills, she ended with nine for the match. Mary Kate Gardner also had a strong showing in the first game with five kills, Gardner also had nine for the match.
The Cardinals battled Moravian in Saturday's second match and won in four games after dropping the first 30-22. The came back winning 30-21, 30-23 and 34-32. Nassib was once again the top hitter with 27 kills in the match including ten in the final game. She also had 23 digs and an ace. Gardner was second up front with ten kills for the match. Setter Emily McGlynn served as a floor general with 50 assists and five service aces to help CUA to the victory.
On Sunday, the Cards defeated Susquehanna 3-1 to finish out conference play. With the victory, CUA finishes 5-1 in the Landmark taking second place which is much higher than their preseason ranking.
To prepare for the conference tournament on November 3, the Cards have a number of matches remaining. They will host Virginia Wesleyan at the DuFour Center on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game against the Marlins.
