WASHINGTON - The Catholic University volleyball team (15-10) defeated the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins (14-8) Tuesday evening at the DuFour Center.  The Cards won in three games to improve to 15-10 on the season.

The first game was a battle with neither team able to claim a large lead.  Finally in the 20's the Cards used power hitting to pull ahead by as much as six.  Despite allowing a small VWU run late in the game Carey Anne Nassib (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) finished it off at 30-24.

The second game started much like the first as the Cards would look to be on a roll but the Marlins always fighting their way back.  What finally gave the Cards the edge was going back to the fundamentals as they controlled the flow if the game thanks to blocks up front and digging in the back row.  Cardinal errors let VWU back in but they managed to hold on to get the 30-27 win.

The Marlins entered game three hot, looking to get back into the match.  They went up by as much as four but the Cardinals weren't giving in easily.  CUA tied it up at 19 and from that point on it was a race to 30.  Sending the ball over and over to Nassib, the Cards went with what works to get the 30-28 win and the match.

Nassib led the squad with 15 kills while Mary Kate Gardner (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Academy) followed with 11.  Liz Koruda (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) had three kills in the middle and also notched five solo blocks for CUA.  Emily McGlynn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) was the leader on assists with 36 for the match.

The Cards will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Frostburg State for a game against the Bobcats.
