Yellow Jackets Edge Cards in Five
Cardinals come back but can't gain advantage in final game
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University volleyball team (9-7) lost to the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets (7-4) Monday night by a close 3-2 decision. During the two and a half hour marathon, every point seemed to be the difference-maker but in the end the Cards came up just short.
The Cardinals starte the first game with momentu from weekend. The fired-up squad came out and ran out to a 9-1 lead thanks to four straight aces from Emily McGlynn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) to begin the game. However, the Cards couldn't keep up that type of intensity and Randolph-Macon clawed its way back pulling within one 22-21. From that point on each point seemed to be the game-breaker as both teams tried to make it to 30. Finally tying it at 29, the Yellow Jackets capitalized on CUA errors to get the come-from-behind 31-29 victory. Carey Anne Nassib (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria) had seven kills in the game.
The second game started like the frst as McGlynn served up three points before the Yellow Jackets could counter. Clinging to their small lead, the Cards fended off every attack as RMC inched their way closer. With the Yellow Jackets stuck in the teens, CUA rallied to an eight-point advantage and behind some big blocks looked to be in the driver's seat to even it up. However, RMC once again came back and forced the Cards to work for their final points to give CUA the 30-27 win.
After two nailbiters, the third game started out with much of the same until Sheri Trentadue from RMC took over serving and staged a Yellow Jacket run leaving the Cards looking at an eight-point deficit. CUA battled back once again but it would't be enough as Randolph-Macon just scraped by with the final 30-27.
McGlynn started it out for the Cards once again and served up six straight points. Leading 18-9, the Cardinals committed a few errors allowing Randolph-Macon back into the game one more time. Just like the second game, RMC looked to be advancing but CUA managed to get the 30-23 win.
The rubber match truly showed how evenly matched the two squads were as neither could gain more than a one-point advantage for the first 21. With the score at 12-10, RMC rattled off two more points to make it 14-10 before CUA got the side out. Unfortuntely it wouldn't be enough as CUA fell 15-13 giving Randolph-Macon the match.
Nassib led the squad with 18 kills for the match while freshman Mary Kate Gardner (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) added 17. Katie Carroll (Ann Arbor, Mich./A.A. Pioneer) had a team-high 28 digs while McGlynn was the leader in assists with 48.
The Cardinals will travel to Washington College for a day of matches on Saturday.
