Volleyball Conquers Hood, Falls to Messiah
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America's volleyball team (4-7) defeated the Blazers of Hood College (0-5) in game one of the tri-team tournament Saturday morning. The four-set match improved CUA's record to 4-7 overall.
The Cards' defense suffocated the Blazers in the opening set, as they held their opponent to just fourteen points. Hood came into the second looking for revenge, and after a grueling back-and-forth battle, finally took the 26-24 victory.
Catholic University then gained offensive momentum that carried them through sets three and four. The team clinched the victory in set four, soundly defeating the Blazers 25-13.
Lynn Brown (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) paced the offense with 12 kills and five digs, while teammate Molly Owens (Floral Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) put down eleven kills for the Cards. Michaela Carroll (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) served up 30 assists and an impressive 16 digs in the win for CUA.
In CUA's second game, they faced up against Messiah College, but were unable to capitalize on a number of offensive opportunities. Leading the way for the Cards was Owens with four kills. Kim Ray (Chicago, Ill/ Regina Dominican) was a defensive force for CUA with 7 defensive digs.
The Cardinals will return to the court on September 17th at 7 p.m., against Frostburg State.
