Volleyball Sweeps Hood
FREDERICK, Md.- The CUA volleyball team added another win to its record with a non-conference victory against host Hood College on Thursday evening. The first set featured four lead changes before the Cardinals (8-24) scored six consecutive points, snapping a 9-9 tie. Hood got no closer than five the rest of the way and the Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-16 triumph.
In the second set, Catholic outscored the Blazers 11-3 to start the match. Hood closed to within 13-8 on a kill and a Cardinal hitting error, but CUA never relinquished its lead and went on to take the second set, 25-13.
In set number three, the Cardinals found themselves ahead once again, this time 14-9. After Hood reeled off seven consecutive points to go up 16-14, CUA responded with a 5-0 run of their own to retake a 19-16 edge. Hood rallied once again to knot the score at 19-19. Hood and Catholic University traded points for the next several serves before Molly Owens (Floral Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) clinched the set with her fourth kill of the match.
The Cards were led by Kim Ray (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) and Katrina Baccetti (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep), with 8 and 7 kills, respectively. Baccetti also recorded 7 defensive digs. Katie Norberg (Grasonville, Md./St. Mary's) tallied 23 assists and 8 digs in the win.
CUA will return to action on November 1st, for a 1 p.m., match against Marymount (Va.).
