Volleyball Goes 3-1 in Opening Weekend of 2009 Season


WASHINGTON-- With 150 kills and 25 aces, the CUA women's volleyball team finished the opening weekend of the 2009 season with a 3-1 record.

Claudia Jean led the way with 33 kills for the Cardinals while Alex Min-Tun added 30 of her own.  Both made the all-tournament team at Eastern Mennonite.  Katie Chefalas added 25 kills while Molly Owens and Lynn Brown each had 20.  Michaela Carroll had 134 set assists and ten services aces to lead CUA.

The Cardinals outblocked their opponents 33-6 in the four contests.  CUA also had 221 digs (15.8 digs per set).

CUA opened the tournament with wins over N.C. Wesleyan (3-0), Eastern Mennonite (3-2) and Mary Baldwin (3-0) before falling to Lynchburg (3-2).  The Cardinals were down two games to zero against Lynchburg but rallied to win the next two and force a decisive game five.

CUA will return to action tonight as the Cardinals will travel only a few miles down I-395 to Marymount University for a match at 7 p.m.
