Cardinals open conference play with a pair of wins

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The CUA volleyball team opened Landmark Conference play on the campus of Susquehanna on Saturday as the Cardinals swept a pair of matches over Moravian and Goucher.  CUA defeated the Greyhounds 3-2 and then took down the Gophers 3-1 in the nightcap.  With the wins CUA improves to 10-7.

Versus Goucher, the Cardinals won in four sets by scores of 27-29, 25-20, 25-19, and 25-20. 

Michaela Carroll led CUA with 38 assists to go along with five digs, while Bridget Kulesh was the team leader with 17 kills.  Tess O'Leary added 11 kills and Claudia Jean recorded a team-best 11 digs.

Goucher was led by Megan Chalk with 18 kills and 15 digs, while Victoria Rain totaled 25 digs.

In the second match versus Moravian, CUA earned the win by set scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 18-25 and 15-9.

Carroll had another great match with 51 assists, 18 digs and two kills, and Jean registered a double-double with 23 kills and 23 digs.  Kristina Purcell added 20 digs for the Cardinals and Kulesh registered 13 kills. 

Katie Chefalas added 28 digs and eight kills and Katrina Baccetti recorded nine kills and a pair of aces.

Kelly Brown led the Greyhounds with 27 digs and 16 kills, while teammate Jesse Krasley totaled 23 digs.

CUA will close out its weekend with a 10 AM match versus the host Susquehanna Crusaders on Sunday morning.
