CUA volleyball splits two matches on final day of EMU Invite
HARRISONBURG, Va. – After sweeping two matches at the EMU
Invite on Friday, the CUA volleyball team split a pair on Saturday
as the Cardinals defeated Mary Baldwin in straight sets before
falling to Mary Washington in five tough sets. Following
Saturday’s action CUA sits at 3-1 on the season.
CUA made quick work of Mary Baldwin as it downed the Fighting
Squirrels 25-14, 25-8 and 25-14. Kristina Purcell led the
Cardinals with 23 digs and eight aces, while Ines Zanotti totaled
17 assists.
In the nightcap the Cardinals and Eagles went back and forth with
CUA taking the first set 25-12 and Mary Washington taking the
second set 25-23. The Eagles then went up 2-1 with a 27-25
victory in set number three but CUA came back and earned a 25-20
victory in the fourth set. Mary Washington eventually
outlasted CUA and took the fifth and final set 15-10.
Claudia Jean was everywhere in the match, notching a double-double
with 25 digs and 15 kills. Kristina Purcell registered 13
digs and Michaela Carroll totaled 30 assists for CUA, while Molly
Owens added six kills and three digs.
Following the day’s action CUA’s Jean and Kristina
Purcell were named to the All-Tournament Team.
CUA will return to action on Tuesday, September 7 when the
Cardinals make the short trip to the University of the District of
Columbia for a 7:00 match.
