CUA claims Messiah tourney crown with two more wins
GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Cardinals tuned up for the postseason with another pair of wins on Saturday as CUA downed Penn State-Berks and Scranton by identical 3-1 scores on the campus of Messiah. With the wins CUA claimed the 2010 Messiah Tournament championship.
Following the day's action CUA sits at 19-13 on the season as it readies for the upcoming conference tournament. The four straight wins for the Cardinals are a season-high.
In the opening match vs. Penn State-Berks CUA took the first set 25-15 before falling in the second 25-13. The Cardinals then regrouped and won the third set easily, 25-15. The fourth set was a tightly contested affair that CUA was able to squeeze out, 25-22.
Claudia Jean once again registered double-digit kills for the Cardinals with 16, while Katie Chefalas did her one better with a team-high 17. Molly Owens was also in double digits with 10, while Michaela Carroll led CUA with 47 assists and also registered 18 digs.
Kristina Purcell added 22 digs and two assists, while Kelly Crimmins totaled nine kills and three digs. Megan Himler also did her part, as she totaled nine digs for the Cardinals.
Jerica Detsch led Penn State-Berks with 20 digs to go along with 11 kills, while Amy Shelton was the team leader in kills with 17.
In the day's second match against Scranton, CUA won its three games rather handily by scores of 25-17 (1), 25-15 (2) and 25-18 (4). The Cardinals did drop the third game 25-22, but rebounded to come back and win the fourth game and take the match.
Three Cardinals registered double-digit kills including Jean (13), Chefalas (12) and Owens (11), while Carroll again was outstanding with 48 assists. Jean (23), Purcell (21) and Chefalas (10) notched double-digit digs and Carroll added eight.
Jean and Owens were the team leaders with three aces apiece and Patricia Fabijanczyk added five kills and three assists.
Jean and Purcell earned spots on the All-Tournament Team for CUA.
The Royals were led by Jennell McFadden with 14 kills, and Juli Woods who handed out 35 assists.
CUA will return to action on Wednesday evening when the Cardinals play host to a familiar foe in Scranton in the 2010 Landmark Conference Tournament quarterfinals. Match time is set for 7:00 from inside DuFour Gymnasium.
