KINGS POINT, N.Y. – CUA improved to 4-1 in the Landmark
Conference with a pair of wins on Saturday. The Cardinals
downed round robin host Merchant Marine in the opener 3-0 before
taking down Scranton by the same 3-0 score in the second
match. CUA is now 15-11 on the season.
In the opening match, CUA downed the host Mariners by scores of
25-17, 29-27 and 25-21 for its third conference victory of the
season. Michaela
Carroll handed out a team-leading 34 assists, while Claudia Jean
totaled ten kills and 14 digs. Kristina
Purcell added 19 digs and Katie Chefalas
chipped in with a big performance, totaling 11 kills and nine
digs.
Molly
Owens added six kills for the Cardinals and Tess O'Leary eight,
while Owens led the team with three aces.
Ana Fuschetto led Merchant Marine with 17 digs and Kelly Hodges
was the leader with nine kills. The Mariners' leader in
assists was Jenna Palaschak with 24.
Later in the day CUA moved into a second place tie in the
conference with a 3-0 win over Scranton. Carroll handed out
27 assists to go along with five digs and Purcell totaled 13 digs.
Jean just missed a double-double with 13 digs and nine kills,
while Chefalas led the Cardinals with 12 kills and also aded four
digs.
The Royals were led by Jenell McFadden with 14 digs and Katie
Newman and Julia Kropf with seven kills apiece. Juli Woods
was the team leader with eight assists.
The Cardinals are now tied with Susquehanna as both schools sit at
4-1 after five league matches.
CUA will close out action at the round robin on Sunday when the
Cardinals take on Juniata in an 11 AM match. Following
Sunday's action the Landmark Conference playoff field will be
set.
