Cardinals selected third in volleyball preseason poll
WASHINGTON – The Landmark Conference announced its 2010
preseason volleyball poll on Wednesday and the Catholic University
Cardinals were selected third with a total of 51 points. CUA
won 16 more matches in 2009 than in 2008, which was the largest
one-season improvement in the entire nation.
CUA posted a 24-14 record in 2009, including a 4-2 record within
the Landmark. The Cardinals advanced to the semifinals of the
Landmark Conference tournament and went undefeated on their home
court (9-0). Following the season Kristina Purcell earned
Second-Team All-Conference accolades after leading CUA and ranking
third in the conference in digs.
Three-time defending champion Juniata topped the poll with 70
points, eight more than second place Susquehanna. Rounding
out the poll were CUA, Goucher (38), Moravian (34), Scranton (20),
and Merchant Marine Academy (19).
CUA is currently hard at work in preseason practice and will open
its 2010 season on Friday, September 3rd when the Cardinals travel
to take on Eastern Mennonite for an 8:00 PM match.
