Cross country to compete at NCAA Regionals this weekend

11/6/2006

WASHINGTON - Two members of the Catholic University of America women's cross country squad were honored by the Capitol Athletic Conference last weekend.  Freshman Remy Ball (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) was named the CAC Rookie of the Year after a successful season and outstanding performance at the conference meet.  Head coach Joe Fisher was honored as the CAC Coach of the Year four the fourth time in his career.

Ball finished in the top four on the team three different times this past season.  She was the fourth fastest at the York Invitational placing 10th overall and third team finisher at the NYU Invitational placing 42nd.  At the CAC Championships Ball took 13th place and came in as one of the top three runners for the Cards who placed third for the meet.  The Newtown, Conn., native is only the third CUA runner to ever receive rookie of the year.

Fisher took home the honor of Coach of the Year after leading his young team to a top three finish at the conference meet.  Fisher is in his 28th year of coaching cross country as well as track and field at CUA.  He has won cross country coach of the year honors three times prior (1991, 1993, 2001) and was named the women's track and field coach of the year last season.  Fisher was a 1975 CUA graduate and an All-American runner for the Cards under legendary coach Jerry McGee.

Both the men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Atlanta, Ga., this weekend for the NCAA Regional meet.
