Cross Country Wins York Invitational
Hackett places third overall
YORK, Pa. - The Catholic University women's cross country squad made a statement Saturday by winning the York College Invitational. The Cardinals scored 45 points and beat seven other teams to come out on top and win their first invite of the season. CUA had seven runners in the top 20 which was more than any other squad.
Jenna Hackett (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) paced the Cardinals finishing third overall in a time of 20:28.78 for the 5000 meter course. This was the second time in as many weeks that Hackett has led the Cards. Coming in just seconds later was senior Samantha McClellan (Union Town, Ohio/Saint Thomas) who has posted a breakout year for CUA. McClellan ran a 20:42.72.
In 10th place was junior Mary Shashaty (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) who ran a 21:12.09 and behind was a trio of Cardinals including Remy Ball (21:55.97, Newtown, Conn./Newtown), Alys Cheatle (22:11.72, Hickory, N.C./Saint Steven's) and Bridgette Smith (22:19.52, Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) at 13th, 14th and 15th. Mary Kate Owens (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) rounded out the top 20 for CUA with a 22:33.61 for the 19th spot overall.
Of the rookies, Madeline Cronan (Denver, Colo./Bishop Machebeuf) and Sarah Meade (Pearl, N.Y./Pearl) also had a solid showing. Cronan was 25th in a time of 23:07.86 and Meade was right behind her with a 23:10.59.
CUA will travel to Philadelphia for the Belmont Classic next Saturday.
